How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU uses this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult because there are two connector pins, and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors are not firing at all. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've ruled out everything else. However, i'm afraid that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. Test them out - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black replacement audi key end of the connector). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the audi spare key replacement crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, for example. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these sensors go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find especially if they're a Bosch audi replacement car keys unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's a vital component of your Audi's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed read more sensor is situated on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should detect an average audi a1 key resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a common component across the Audi 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
